ONYX COUNTERTOPS

(United Granite, and Fairfax Marble)

The beauty of onyx countertops is insurmountable! No other stone can even come close to its brilliance, especially backlit onyx with its strikingly dynamic visual appeal. Onyx is delicate, semi-translucent and is available in a wide range of colors from white to deep green, and a vast spectrum between. This stone not only has many options for color but for veining as well. Onyx is a sedimentary rock and this precious stone is formed in caves from the drips of stalagmites and stalactites.

Onyx offers a sense of sophistication and elegance to a space. When illuminated, the subtle details in the complex patterning of this extraordinary stone are revealed. But with all great things comes great responsibility.

Onyx is a very fragile stone. Slabs of onyx are smaller than those of other natural stones; due to its fragility is it not as easily extracted from the ground. Often a fiberglass backing compound is applied to strengthen the stone and keep it intact. Onyx’s fragility is mostly due to the fact that it is a soft stone. Onyx does not hold up well with very regular use, and just about anything sharp or hard enough can easily scratch and scrape this countertop material.

Etching is also a major issue with onyx as it is very sensitive and vulnerable to acidic liquids. Use of an impregnating sealer is a necessity for this stone. Caring for onyx requires discipline. You will need to attempt to keep it clean at all times and be sure to clean up any spills immediately. Because of the ease in which onyx etches and the fragility and softness of it, the most predominantly used areas include; fire place surrounds, wall surrounds, bathroom vanities, bar tops that do not see frequent traffic, and as a backsplash in kitchens. The best place for onyx is one where it can be showcased and admired but not worn out.

Onyx is rare, and so it is also expensive. It is the most expensive countertop material that you can buy. Because it is so rare, it is perfect if you are looking to stand out from the crowd, and every piece of onyx is going to be unique.

Although onyx slabs are expansive and considered rather impractical, one cannot deny its sheer beauty. If the price point does not bother, and you are dedicated to maintaining the upkeep of the stone, then onyx is a beautiful and wonderful choice for a very unique countertop.  We carry onyx slabs at our Northern Virginia and Maryland slab yards including Chantilly VA, Fairfax VA, Sterling Virginia, Elkridge Maryland - Servigin Baltimore MD Area, and Crofton MD-serving Annapolis MD area.
