Is marble really that fragile? What can be done to avoid future problems?
It is true that marble is a more fragile stone than granite, however, marble is not as fragile as it is exaggerated to be. Marble countertops and flooring have been used in the most luxurious of places such as DC, Manhattan, Europe, and in many high-end malls. Marble is even commonly used in commercial flooring. We've installed numerous marble countertops in the hot DC metro areas such as Arlington VA, Vienna VA, Potomac MD, Bethesda MD, downtown Washington, DC. All the uses of marble do not target indestructibility, but instead, a beautifully unique look. It is also a great top for baking as it maintains a consistently cool temperature.
Scratching and etching are very similar. Scratching is done by a hard object such as a knife. Etching happens from acidic liquids such as lemon juice or coke. Choosing a honed finish on marble can prevent this potential issue. A honed finish is basically a matte finish, as opposed to the shiny polished finish, and can be applied to marble slabs by sanding or acid washing. Sometimes a honed finish is actually the original finish of the stone. In that case, it is not necessary to hone the stone. Marble Counter Tops may still get a scratch or etched even if they have a honed finish, but the finish of the stone will hide them well compared to a polished finish. Additionally, repairing scratches or etches on marble with a honed finished is much easier than doing so on a polished finish. Repairing can be done by sanding the problem area. An important factor in reducing the possibility of etching, and even staining, is wiping off any liquid within a short period of time.
The other concern with marble tops is staining. This is not as big an issue as it was before because sealing companies have improved their chemicals quite a bit. Using a good sealer and re-sealing your marble kitchen countertops often will prevent staining. Dry treat, granite shield sealer, miracle sealer, DuPont bullet proof sealer are just a few of the reputable brands in the natural stone industry. We highly recommend (and use) Miracle 511 porous plus sealer for marble countertops. This sealer has a recommended cleaner designed to re-seal your marble countertop as you clean; 511 Klean and Reseal.
